We came across an incredible initiative, Human Mart, that brings awareness to the very real and horrifying issue of slavery in Australia. While we all may recoil at those words, this is happening here and now.
It's an initiative by not-for-profit, Anti-Slavery Australia who raise awareness about the plight of more than 15,000 people in Australia who are victims of modern slavery.
Along with it's website, Human Mart has set up a "shop" on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, where you can go in, learn the stories of affected people and "buy" or donate - "Tricked + Deserted" will cost you $1.10, "Fear Filled" comes in at $12.90 or perhaps "Twisted Morals" for $2.60.
This brilliant approach engages us to want to learn more, to want to act, to want to share the stories and gives us a vehicle for doing so. It is an appalling reality for too many people, and it makes us sick to the stomach - Human Mart cuts through and makes us take action. We take our hats off to those who initiated and created it - Anti Slavery Australia, Agency Cocogun, The Glue Society and Candid Communications.
Check it out here and if you are around the hood, a visit to the store promises a mind opener.
