Donning her Good Day Girl White Shirt, Cocoon Coat and Sashay Pants, Robyn takes us through her day and tells us what books spark her “month”.
You have an amazing library of beautiful books – which one do you open the most?
That is such an interesting question. I cannot say just one, as I have converted my dining table into a series of stacks of current favourites. I change those stacks once a month. I would have to say it more in categories. This month:
Fiction: my new Kate Betts. “My Paris Dreams”
Garden: Always return to “La Foce” an Italian piece of Paradise
Interiors: ”Around Beauty” by Barbara Barry and “Linens for Every Room and Occasion”
People: ”The Power Of Style”…talking about women from Elsie de Wolfe to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – I adore this book.
Top tip to give someone who is pondering starting their own small business? Understand your real point of difference and how to reach your customer – most importantly pay strict attention to your cash flow.
What is the most asked question in your workshops at The School? How do I monetize my ideas?
How do you like to relax? I adore gardening and it takes me outside – the pleasure of planting and seeing your results is a joy. And reading, I always have at least two books on the go at once.
What colour combinations make you feel happy? Seasonally it changes, in winters I adore the moss greens, deep chocolate, greys and a splash of mustard like low lying sun. Summer, is brights – clear ocean blues and crisp whites.
Memories are in what we wear, what piece of clothing or accessory takes you immediately to that moment? My evening Yves Saint Laurent jacket black velvet, silver buttons, and satin outlined buttonholes. I wore it to the first couture show I attended of Yves Saint Laurent in Paris and every time I wear it I feel I am going to be part of something special. Also, my diamond bracelet my late father gave me when I was 30 to celebrate walking into the world as a woman. I put it on and remember the day he gave it to me.
Do you plan what you are wearing the night before or do you reach for whatever is closest when you get dressed in the morning? I am a great planner, as I like my mornings to ease into the day, so I always plan what I am wearing the night before if only in my head.
Is there a present or past day style icon that you draw inspiration from? Always Mr. Saint Laurent and Mr. Givenchy but I am so fortunate to count these two style icons as my friends Michael Love and Cameron Kimber who design interiors that have certain panache.
With all your travels, what city most inspires you? Any reason? I would have to say London because all through my life in each decade, I have lived and often worked there. I feel completely at home but it always surprises me in some magical way.
How important is it that your clothes are functional? I think form and function are not just an architectural desire but also a fashion desire. Clothes should function well – nothing should feel uncomfortable or ill fitting as it shows on your face.
How do you feel in your Good Day Girl ensemble? I love my outfit from Good Day Girl as it is easy to wear and takes me from day to night in one magic step. Each piece can build a story with what I own currently and that is a bonus.
